Kitale, Kenya Team Update #6

Wow, it was hard to say goodbye, but today was our last day at Mattaw.

We spent the morning hanging out with the children. Then around 11:00 am they sang, danced and recited poems for us. We then shared lots of hugs and said our goodbyes. Needless to say, our hearts were touched by these beautiful children and we count it a privilege to have had the opportunity to spend a week with them.

At lunch time we headed to a small restaurant and enjoyed some time with Bud and Kim. We have all been very impressed with their ministry and with them as individuals. We also said our goodbyes to Alicia as she will be staying for a few…

Kitale, Kenya Team Update #5

Wow, it’s hard to believe today was our last full day at Mattaw. It was a great day and we got a great deal accomplished. We even experienced our first heavy rainfall in the middle of afternoon.

This morning started out early for a couple of our team members as they helped take some children to physical therapy. It was an eye-opening experience to see how physical therapy is practiced in Kenya.

Once the rest of us arrived at Mattaw, we hit the ground running. The ladies got to experience another morning of washing laundry by hand, while some of the guys help build shelves.

When the laundry was over, the girls returned to their painting projects. They continued their…

Kitale, Kenya Team Update #4

Today was a busy and productive day. The girls painted the gate into Mattaw and some of the windows in the houses during most of the morning. The guys spent their morning running errands around town.

During the afternoon, some of the girls decorated canvas bags with the kids and workers, the other girls painted in the school and the guys played games with kids. After that we helped prepare dinner. We made beef stew, boiled potatoes and tortillas.

This evening we ate dinner at Mattaw with the kids. We also made a bonfire and introduced the kids and workers to s’mores. The s’mores were a huge hit. I guess chocolate, graham crackers and marshmallows transcend cultural differences.

Kitale, Kenya Team Update #3

We had another good day at Mattaw Children’s Village. We started off by helping wash clothes for the children. Nine people and four hours later, we finished. It took so long because most of us are not used to washing clothes by hand. Needless to say, we all have a newfound appreciation of washing machines and dryers!

After we completed the morning laundry, we prepared meals for 40+ people. We cooked hot dogs on the grill, sliced the hot dog buns and prepared the plates for everyone.

Next, some of the guys cut down a couple of trees with a machete for tomorrow’s bonfire. We will be introducing the kids to s’mores. The ladies decorated t-shirts with the kids using…

Kitale, Kenya Team Update #1

After spending approximately 48 hours in travel, we safely arrived in Kitale, Kenya. When we arrived at Mattaw Children’s Village we were greeted with songs and dances by the children. There are about 30 children at Mattaw. After some introductions we spent time with children doing crafts, playing games and hanging out. Everyone enjoyed playing with the children. Their smiles and hugs are incredible.

Sunday morning we lead Bible study for the children at church and lead during the preaching time. It was fun to worship with the children and adults from the community. For lunch we made peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for the children. During the afternoon, children played on the swings, played soccer and simply hung out.…
